The Great Wall Museum in Jiayuguan gives context to the fort, towers, and desert walls around the city. Models, maps, and artefacts help explain how the western Ming frontier worked, which is useful before you head out to the pass itself.
It is not as atmospheric as standing on the wall in the wind, but it makes the larger landscape more legible. Treat it as the briefing room for Jiayuguan's frontier sights.
