Wine Spring Park (酒泉公园) is a traditional garden around the spring that gave Jiuquan its name — the "wine spring" of the legend in which the Han general Huo Qubing, celebrating his victory over the Xiongnu in 121 BC, poured his imperial gift of wine into a spring to share with his entire army. The spring itself still flows, though the water is untreated and not for drinking; a series of pavilions, ponds, and garden walks surround it in the conventional Chinese garden style.
The park is pleasant rather than remarkable — the kind of urban green space that every Chinese city maintains around its historical claims. The best reason to visit is the small museum at the park entrance about Huo Qubing and the Han campaigns in the Hexi Corridor, which provides context for why this remote city was important enough to need a legend. The park is busiest on summer evenings when local families use it for recreation.
