When to Go

Pingliang is most pleasant in late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October), when temperatures are moderate and the forested slopes of Kongtong Mountain are at their most attractive. Summer is warm but can be wet; winter is cold, though Kongtong Mountain in snow has its own appeal.

The major Taoist festival dates on the Chinese lunar calendar draw pilgrims to Kongtong Mountain in significant numbers — the Double Ninth Festival (ninth day of the ninth lunar month) is the most important, when the mountain is traditionally ascended as an act of piety. Visiting during these times is atmospheric but the mountain will be crowded.
