Maijishan, with its extraordinary Buddhist cave sculptures, is the obvious day trip from Tianshui and should not be missed. The Wushan Water Curtain Caves, further northwest, make a longer full-day excursion for those with an extra day. The forested foothills south of the city are accessible by local bus for those who want natural scenery without specific cultural sites.
