Getting Around

Guangzhou's metro system is the practical backbone of the city — extensive, cheap, and easy to navigate with English signage at all stations. Lines connect the airport, the main rail stations, and all the major tourist areas. A single journey rarely costs more than 9 yuan; you tap in and out with a stored-value card or pay cash at the gates.

Taxis are plentiful and relatively cheap by international standards. Flag fall is around 12 yuan, and most central journeys cost 20–40 yuan. Very few drivers speak English, so have your destination written in Chinese characters.

Ride-hailing apps (DiDi is the dominant one) work well and can be used with a foreign credit card and an international phone number. This is often easier than hailing a taxi.

The Pearl River ferry service links the southern bank (Haizhu and Panyu) with the northern bank and is a scenic alternative to the metro for short river crossings. Bikes and e-bikes are widely rented through apps and are useful for exploring Shamian Island and the Yuexiu park area.
