Qingping Market

Massive traditional market with exotic produce and herbs

One of Guangzhou's most famous markets, sprawling along Qingping Road near Shamian Island. The market dates back to the early 1980s when it was one of China's first free markets after the reform era began. Today it specializes mainly in dried goods, traditional Chinese medicine ingredients, herbs, and exotic produce. The dried seafood section alone is worth a wander — stalls piled high with everything from shark fins to dried starfish. The atmosphere is pure Guangzhou: loud, crowded, and fascinating. Come early in the morning when the vendors are setting up and the energy is highest.
