Beihai Old Street

Beihai Old Street (Zhongshan Road) is a few blocks of late nineteenth-century arcaded shophouses, now given over to small shops, craft vendors, tea houses, and bars. The buildings are in reasonable condition and the street retains its original character: a pedestrianised commercial lane with the covered walkways that allowed year-round pavement use despite the subtropical rain. The scale is modest — this is not a major heritage zone — but the atmosphere is pleasant and the food stalls are good.

The street is at its best in the evening when the bars and restaurants open and the daytime souvenir-shopping crowd thins out. The corner tea houses are genuine local establishments rather than tourist performance; sitting in one with a pot of Guangxi tea is a better way to spend an hour than walking the same hundred metres three times. The street connects easily to the nearby seafront, making it a natural stopping point between the beach and the city.

A story
Beihai was one of the original treaty ports opened after the Sino-French War of 1883–85, and the colonial-era buildings on Old Street date from the subsequent decades of French, British, and German commercial presence. The arcaded shophouses combine European structural techniques with the wide overhanging eaves of the regional building tradition — a hybrid that is more functionally adapted to the subtropical climate than either purely European or purely Chinese architecture would be.
