Yangshuo has become one of Asia's most celebrated rock climbing destinations, with over 300 bolted routes on the karst peaks surrounding the town. The limestone here has better friction than most karst — the erosion pattern has left the surface rough rather than polished — and the routes range from beginner slabs accessible to anyone with a half-day lesson to long multi-pitch climbs that require genuine technical skill.
Several guiding operations in town offer instruction and equipment for all levels. Half-day beginner courses are the most popular, typically covering a crag near Moon Hill or in the Bijia Mountain area with a professional guide. Experienced climbers can rent gear and access routes independently. The climbing season runs year-round, though the June-to-August monsoon makes wet rock a regular factor. October through December has the best combination of dry rock and cool temperatures.
