Tianxingqiao Scenic Area

Tianxingqiao (Celestial Star Bridge) is the karst landscape section of the Huangguoshu Scenic Area, 6 kilometres downstream from the main falls. Where the main falls experience is about volume and drama, Tianxingqiao is about texture: natural stone bridges, shallow pools overgrown with aquatic plants, limestone formations at human scale, and a boardwalk route through a landscape so densely botanical it reads as a garden rather than a wilderness.

The area covers about 4 square kilometres of karst formations, with the route leading through three distinct sections — a natural bonsai area where trees grow from crevices in the limestone pavement, a cave section, and a stone forest on water where karst pillars rise from flooded ground. The pools have the same turquoise colour as the main falls — the clarity comes from the same chemistry, calcium-saturated water filtering through limestone — and they are shallow enough to see through to the bottom throughout.

Shuttle buses connect Tianxingqiao to the main Huangguoshu entrance. The walk through the zone takes about two hours at a comfortable pace. The crowds are lighter than at the main falls, and the light in late afternoon falls well on the stone formations.

A story
The natural stone bridges at Tianxingqiao are remnants of cave roofs that collapsed over thousands of years as underground rivers dissolved the limestone beneath. The sections that didn't collapse became bridges spanning dry gorges or active streams. The karst surface here was once a continuous cave system; what you walk through now is the skeleton of that underground world, exposed to the sky.
