When to Go

Danzhou has a tropical monsoon climate on the northwestern coast of Hainan. The dry season runs from October through April, with the coolest and most comfortable months being December through February. This is the best time to visit the Yangpu Ancient Salt Field, when evaporation rates are highest and the salt harvest is active. The Dongpo Academy is worth visiting year-round and is at its most atmospheric in the cooler dry season.

The wet season (May through September) brings humidity and occasional typhoons but the landscape is lush and the city has a vivid, humid tropicality. The cave geopark is accessible year-round. Ocean Flower Island, the large artificial archipelago being developed offshore, is gradually adding hotel and leisure infrastructure that may eventually give Danzhou a more prominent place on tourist itineraries.
