The main access point is Fengning Manchu Autonomous County, which can be reached by bus from Beijing's Siyuanqiao bus terminal in approximately three hours. Coaches run throughout the morning. Fengning is the usual base for the grassland camps to the north.
An alternative approach is to combine the grasslands with a visit to Chengde, which is to the south and accessible by train from Beijing. From Chengde, the Bashang grasslands are around two hours by road. Several operators in Chengde run day trips to the grassland areas during the summer season. Hiring a car and driver from either Beijing or Chengde gives the most flexibility for reaching the less-visited sections of the plateau.
