Horse Riding on the Steppe

The most popular activity in the Bashang Grasslands is horse riding across the open steppe. Several Mongolian-style horse camps operate in the area around Zhangbei and Fengning, offering horses by the hour or by the day with guides who can take you across country rather than walking circles around a paddock. The terrain genuinely rewards it: the land is open, the distances are real, and riding here feels different from the resort pony-trekking available at other Chinese scenic areas.

For longer rides, multi-day programmes are available that cross from one grassland camp to another with overnight stays in yurt camps on the steppe. These require some riding ability and are best arranged in advance through operators in the main access towns. The riding season runs from May through October; peak season is July and August when the grass is greenest and the Mongolian camp atmosphere is most active.

A story
The Qing emperors came to this grassland every autumn to hunt and to receive the Mongolian, Tibetan, and Kazakh nobles who formed the outer ring of the empire. The hunts were not recreational — they were a form of military training and political demonstration, a way of showing that the Manchu rulers had not forgotten the martial skills that had put them on the throne. The imperial hunting parties sometimes numbered in the tens of thousands and lasted for weeks.
