The old town snack street runs north from the south gate along Nan Da Jie, a pedestrian-only stretch of Qing-style storefronts that is the most concentrated eating zone inside the walls. Stalls along the way sell da gao (the local brown-sugar cake), grilled lamb skewers, jianbing (savoury crepes with egg and crispy wonton), donkey-meat sandwiches, fresh peach juice, candied haws, and a long row of more substantial dumpling and noodle restaurants behind the stall fronts.
It is the easiest and most enjoyable way to eat in Shanhaiguan — graze the street for an evening rather than commit to a restaurant. The area is at its liveliest from about 6pm to 10pm. Cash and Chinese mobile-payment apps are accepted; foreign credit cards usually not.
