Shanhaiguan is a compact walled town that can be covered on foot in a long afternoon. The east gate (First Pass Under Heaven), the south and north city walls, the small old streets, and the Great Wall Museum are within ten minutes' walk of one another. The two most impressive sights — Old Dragon's Head, where the Great Wall enters the sea, and Jiao Mountain, the first peak of the mountain Great Wall — are 5–7 km out of town and need a taxi or bus.
