Eating Out

Shanhaiguan's food is northern Chinese with strong seaside notes. The town is famous for da gao — a sweet brown-sugar steamed cake sold from street stalls — and for biscuit cakes (shaobing) and braised donkey meat sandwiches in the local Hebei style. Down on the coast at Old Dragon's Head and the Bohai Sea villages, the focus shifts to seafood: grilled flatfish, salt-and-pepper crab, scallops, and the famous Qinhuangdao prawns. Cold Yanjing or Snow beer is the usual accompaniment.
