When to Go

Jigongshan's appeal is largely seasonal. The mountain draws visitors from late spring through early autumn as an escape from the heat of the plains — summer temperatures here are typically 5 to 8 degrees cooler than Zhengzhou or Wuhan, which made it popular with foreign missionaries and Communist party officials alike. July and August are the busiest months; weekends fill with families from Xinyang and Wuhan. Spring (April to May) is the most beautiful time, when rhododendrons and magnolias flower against the fresh green of the new forest growth.

Autumn brings comfortable temperatures and good walking conditions before the November cold sets in. Winter visits are possible but the mountain is largely quiet; some guesthouses close. Avoid Golden Week (early October) if you dislike crowds.
