Lei Yue Mun Seafood Village

Waterfront village where you pick live seafood from tanks and have it cooked to order

Lei Yue Mun sits at the narrow eastern entrance to Victoria Harbour, where the crossing to Hong Kong Island is barely 200 metres wide. The old fishing village on the Kowloon shore has transformed into a seafood restaurant row where the process is direct: choose your fish, shellfish, or crab from display tanks outside the restaurants, negotiate the price, and specify how you want it cooked. The results are generally excellent.

The setting adds to the experience — the narrow channel, the fishing boats, and the lights of Sai Wan Ho across the water at night make this one of the more atmospheric dining spots in Hong Kong. Take the MTR to Yau Tong and then a short taxi or minibus to the waterfront. Most restaurants have English menus or can communicate via pointing. Evening is best; lunchtime is quieter.
