Yuanyou Palace

Yuanyou Palace stands adjacent to the Xianling Tomb complex and is one of the best-preserved Ming dynasty ancestral ritual spaces in China. Built between 1540 and 1553 under the direct instruction of the Jiajing Emperor, the palace served as the site where imperial sacrifices and rituals were performed in honour of the posthumously elevated emperor's parents. The scale is intimate compared to the Forbidden City, but the craftsmanship is exceptional — original lacquered beams, carved stone balustrades, and painted ceilings survive in a state that far more famous monuments cannot match.

The palace is included in the UNESCO World Heritage designation that covers the Xianling Tomb and offers insight into how Ming imperial ritual actually worked in practice. The inscribed stone stelae within the complex record the political disputes that surrounded the construction, making it as much a document of Jiajing-era court politics as a work of architecture. Visit it as part of a combined Xianling Tomb day-trip from Jingmen.
