Chairman Mao Memorial Museum

The Chairman Mao Memorial Museum in Shaoshan covers Mao's early life and the beginnings of the Chinese Communist movement, with free admission and exhibits that include genuine historical photographs, documents, and personal objects. The early sections — covering his schooling in Changsha, his political awakening, and the formation of the CCP — contain material of real historical interest.

The museum is at its strongest on the pre-1949 period and most selective in its coverage of the period after 1949. For international visitors this makes it more interesting rather than less: seeing how a major historical figure is officially presented to his own people is itself significant. The building is large and air-conditioned, making it a practical midday stop in summer.

A story
The museum presents Mao's life from birth through his early revolutionary years without qualification, and with genuine historical photographs and artefacts. The gap between the official narrative and the documented record of his later rule — famine, purges, the Cultural Revolution — is something visitors can notice for themselves. The museum doesn't try to fill it.
