Erlian is a transit town with a genuine personality. The dinosaur heritage is the star — the basin around Erlian has yielded some of the largest sauropod fossils ever found — and the border crossing itself is a spectacle worth watching even if you are not crossing. The open steppe around the town is accessible on short tours, offering grassland experiences that are far less packaged than those near Hohhot.
