Zalantun's cooking reflects its position at the junction of steppe, forest, and river. The lamb dishes that dominate elsewhere in Inner Mongolia are here supplemented — and sometimes overshadowed — by freshwater fish, wild mushrooms, and venison. Restaurants along the main street are honest and unpretentious; the city is small enough that any busy dining room is worth walking into.
