Pobuqi Gorge Scenic Area

Pobuqi Gorge is the most dramatic piece of scenery near Zalantun, a narrow river canyon cut through the southern foothills of the Greater Khingan range. The valley walls close in tightly in places, the river running clear over rounded stones, and the birch and oak trees that cover the slopes make it one of the finest autumn destinations in northeastern China. The colour change typically peaks in late September and early October, when the hillsides shift from green to gold and copper.

Trails follow both banks of the river for several kilometres, with rope bridges crossing at intervals. The walk is not strenuous — the terrain is valley floor and gentle slope rather than serious mountain climbing — but the distance means a full day is well spent here. Local operators in Zalantun run minibus transfers to the gorge entrance, around 20 km from the city centre; taxis are also available.

A story
The gorge takes its name from the Mongolian word for "willow tree pass." The local Oroqen and Daur communities used its dense forest cover for hunting grounds for centuries, and the trees here include Mongolian oak and Daurian birch that rarely appear at this latitude in China.
