Wanghai Tower and Fengchenghe Park

Wanghai Tower is the restored centrepiece of the Fengchenghe scenic area, a waterfront district built along an ancient canal in the heart of Hailing District. The tower itself is a multi-storey traditional pavilion in the Tang-Song style, its upturned eaves reflected in the water below. The surrounding park has been landscaped with willows, stone bridges, and small garden pavilions.

The Fengchenghe area is the most photogenic part of Taizhou and genuinely pleasant for an evening walk — the restored shophouses along the canal embankment house tea rooms and small restaurants, and the illuminated reflections on the water after dark are particularly good. The area is walkable from the city centre and free to enter.

A story
The original Wanghai Tower — "Tower for Gazing at the Sea" — stood here because in ancient times, when the coast lay much closer, travellers would climb it to see ships approaching from the Yellow Sea. Today the sea has retreated thirty kilometres east as land reclamation pushed the shoreline outward, but the view from the tower still commands the rooftops of the old town.
