Song Dynasty City Walls

Ganzhou's city walls were constructed during the Song dynasty and survive in several intact sections along the southern and western edges of the old city. The walls stand about seven metres high and are built from large grey bricks laid without mortar in the traditional Song manner. Several of the original watchtowers remain, including the well-preserved Bajing Tower at the southern tip of the peninsula, which commands long views up both rivers.

The walls can be walked along the top for much of their surviving length — a walk along the full accessible section takes about forty minutes. The best vantage points are at the corners, where the rivers converge and the contrast between the ancient stonework and the modern city on the opposite bank is most striking.
