Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum

The Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Museum (古窑民俗博览区) is the most comprehensive overview of traditional porcelain production in Jingdezhen, preserving a set of working climbing kilns alongside demonstrations of the full production sequence from clay preparation to finished glaze. The kilns themselves — long, multi-chambered structures that run up the side of a hill — are fired periodically and the viewing of an active kiln is extraordinary.

The complex also preserves workshops for each step of the traditional process: potters' wheels, painting and glazing stations, and the wood-fired kilns that were used for imperial production for centuries. The demonstrations are not staged for tourists — skilled artisans work here full-time, and watching a master painter apply cobalt underglaze to a porcelain surface with a hair-thin brush is genuinely absorbing. Allow two to three hours.

A story
The traditional climbing kilns (龙窑, dragon kilns) preserved here could reach over 1300°C — hot enough to vitrify clay into porcelain — by exploiting the natural draft of a hillside. The kilns required enormous quantities of wood fuel, which is why Jingdezhen's surrounding hills were progressively deforested over centuries of imperial production, a fact that eventually forced the switch to coal firing in the Qing dynasty.
