Xilin Temple

Xilin Temple (西林寺) is a Buddhist temple on the northern face of Lushan that dates to the Eastern Jin dynasty, making it one of the oldest religious sites on the mountain. The current buildings are largely reconstructed — the temple was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over the centuries — but the site retains its historical significance and the surrounding landscape is beautiful.

The temple is most famous for its literary association: the Song-dynasty poet Su Dongpo inscribed one of his most celebrated poems on its wall after a visit in 1084. The poem (题西林壁, "Inscribed on the Wall of Xilin Temple") is still displayed in the temple, and the contrast between the high philosophical aspiration of the poem and the modest temple setting is part of its appeal. The temple is accessible by path from Guling, about 2 kilometres.

A story
Su Dongpo (Su Shi) wrote one of his most famous quatrains at Xilin Temple in 1084: "From the side it is a range; face on, a peak. High and low, far and near, it is never the same." The poem concludes with the observation that you cannot know the true form of Lushan because you are inside it — a line that has been applied philosophically to questions of self-knowledge for nearly a thousand years.
