Luxi Ancient Town

Luxi Ancient Town (芦溪古镇), about 30 kilometers east of central Pingxiang, preserves a stretch of Ming and Qing dynasty commercial architecture along the Luxi River. The town was historically a trading post on the route between Jiangxi and Hunan, and the surviving shophouses and guild halls reflect the prosperity of that cross-provincial commerce. The riverside setting — old stone bridges, willow trees, and the reflections of whitewashed walls in the water — is more naturally scenic than the more famous Huizhou villages to the northeast.

Luxi is considerably less visited than comparable ancient towns in Anhui or Zhejiang, which makes the experience more relaxed. Local residents still live and work in many of the old buildings, giving the streetscape an authenticity that is increasingly rare in heavily promoted heritage sites. A half-day trip from Pingxiang is feasible.
