When to Go

Spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October) are the best times to visit Baicheng, principally because these are the peak migration windows for the cranes and waterfowl that make the Xianghai and Momoge nature reserves worth visiting. The grasslands are also at their best in May and June when growth is lush and temperatures are pleasant.

Summer is warm but can be humid, with occasional heavy rains. Winter is very cold — temperatures can drop well below minus twenty — and the nature reserves are largely quiet. The landscape in winter has a stark, frozen quality that some visitors find compelling, but most activity shuts down.
