Baishan's seasons are strongly marked by altitude and latitude. Summer (June to August) is pleasant for hiking and river activities, with temperatures comfortably warm rather than oppressive. Autumn is the best season visually — the forests of birch, pine, and mixed deciduous trees in the surrounding mountains turn in late September and early October, and the border river has a quiet atmospheric quality in the cool mornings.
Winter is cold and long, with reliable snow from November through March. Skiing at Beishan and the mountain scenery are the winter draws. Spring arrives late — March and April can still bring snow — but brings wildflowers in the valleys and the first mushrooms in the forest.
