Getting to Changbaishan requires planning. The standard approach is via the town of Baihe (Erdao Baihezhen), which is the gateway town for the northern slope. Baihe is reachable by train from Jilin City, or by high-speed rail to Baishan followed by road transport to Baihe. The journey from Changchun takes most of a day.
From Baihe, public shuttle buses run to the northern slope entrance during the open season. The park runs its own internal shuttle system from the entrance to the base station, and 4WD vehicles take visitors from there to the crater rim — both are included in the entrance cost.
The western slope has a separate entrance and is not easily combined with the northern slope in a single day. Access is by road from Baishan or from Antu County.
The reserve is inaccessible from approximately October through May due to snow and ice on the access roads and crater paths. Check current conditions before travelling in the shoulder months.
Park entrance fees are substantial — admission, internal shuttle, and the 4WD to the crater add up to several hundred yuan. Budget accordingly.
