The Changbaishan crater is only accessible from roughly June through September, with late July and August offering the best weather odds for a clear view of Tianchi lake. Cloud is the primary hazard — the summit can be completely socked in even when the base is clear, and there is no reliable way to predict it. Many visitors come two or three times over multiple days to improve their chances of a clear view.
Late August and early September are a reasonable balance of good weather odds and manageable crowds. The July to August peak season brings heavy Chinese domestic tourism, and the shuttle buses and crater path can feel crowded.
October brings autumn colour to the birch forests on the lower slopes — some of the best scenery in the reserve, though the summit may be inaccessible by late October. The western slope canyon tends to stay open slightly later than the northern summit.
Winter (November through May) closes the park effectively. The cold at this elevation is extreme and the roads are iced.
