Mount Baekdu is the great volcanic summit above Heaven Lake, straddling the China-North Korea border. It rises to 2,744 metres and has enormous cultural weight for Koreans, who connect it with the founding myths of the Korean people.
The Chinese side is the practical way most travellers see the mountain. Weather changes quickly at the rim, but when the cloud lifts the view into the crater lake is one of northeast Asia's most memorable natural sights.
