Korean Folk Customs Park

The Korean Folk Customs Park reconstructs traditional Korean village architecture — farmhouses, thatched rooflines, communal spaces — from the kind of rural community that Yanbian's founding migrants left behind. The craftsmanship is genuine even if the setting is somewhat theatrical, and the park provides a concentrated version of the material culture that is otherwise scattered across the city's daily life.

Restaurants within the park serve traditional food — cold noodles, Korean barbecue, fermented dishes — in a setting that emphasises their cultural context. The park draws both Chinese tourists curious about the Korean minority and Korean tourists from South Korea exploring their diaspora. Go in the morning when it is quieter; weekend afternoons can be crowded. The park also hosts cultural performances and festivals during major Korean holidays.

A story
The Hamgyong dialect spoken in Yanji is the dialect of Korea's northeastern provinces — the area that is now the northern part of North Korea. Most of Yanbian's Korean community descends from people who left those provinces in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The dialect has changed and evolved in China while North Korean policy sealed the original territory, creating the odd situation where the most intact form of some older speech patterns may now exist not in Korea at all but in this Chinese prefecture.
