Benxi is about an hour from Shenyang by train or road — close enough for a day trip, though two nights is worthwhile in autumn when the mountains are at their best. Regular trains connect the two cities. From Shenyang, buses and taxis also serve the route.
The Benxi Water Caves are 26 kilometres east of the city centre, accessible by public bus or taxi. Guanmen Mountain is also east of the city. For Wunu Mountain in Huanren County, the journey is around 100 kilometres east of Benxi — hire a car or take the bus from Benxi's long-distance bus station to Huanren.
