Dahuofang Reservoir

Dahuofang Reservoir is the largest in northeast China, covering over 110 square kilometres of what was once a populated valley on the Hun River. The Saerhu Scenic Area on its shores provides boat trips, hiking trails, and views of a landscape that would be entirely unremarkable if it were not for the industrial city forty kilometres to the west.

The contrast is the point. Fushun is defined by coal and heavy industry; the reservoir is all forest and water, and the combination of both in a single day trip makes the industrial history more legible by comparison. The hiking trails around Saerhu vary in difficulty and are well-marked. Boat rental is available in season. The area is popular with Shenyang residents on weekends, which means weekday visits are considerably quieter.

A story
Dahuofang Reservoir is the source of drinking water for over fifteen million people in Shenyang and the surrounding region — a fact the local signs do not let you forget. Its creation in the 1950s required the relocation of tens of thousands of residents from the valley below, and the submerged village foundations are occasionally visible during low-water years.
