Yinchuan splits into two main districts: the new city (xin cheng) centred on the train station, and the old city (lao cheng) to the west, where most of the interesting sights are. City buses connect the two, but taxis are inexpensive and much more practical. Ride-hailing apps (DiDi) work well here.
For day trips to the Helan Mountains, the Western Xia tombs, and Sand Lake, taxis are essentially the only option. Negotiate a round-trip fare including waiting time; drivers are generally honest about the going rate, and hotel staff can advise on what's reasonable.
Cycling is possible within the old city — the terrain is flat and the distances are short.
