Ningxia Museum

The Ningxia Museum is the best place in the region to understand the history of the Western Xia dynasty and the Hui people. Spread across multiple floors, the collection includes Western Xia artefacts excavated from the imperial tombs — bronze statues, ceramic tiles with Tangut script, jade ornaments — along with Islamic art and items reflecting the Hui cultural tradition.

The museum building itself is worth a look: it draws on both Chinese classical and Islamic architectural motifs. Admission is free, and the English labelling, while inconsistent, is adequate for most of the major pieces. Budget two hours.
