Sand Lake

Sand Lake (Shahu) is one of Yinchuan's most unusual attractions — a large wetland reserve where open water and reed marshes meet the edge of the desert, with sand dunes rising directly from the lake shore. The juxtaposition of water and dunes in the same frame is striking.

The lake itself is home to significant populations of waterbirds, including grey herons, cormorants, and various duck species. Boat trips run through the reed beds. On the dune side, camel rides, sandboarding, and dune buggies are available for those who want activity rather than birds. The reserve is about 40 kilometres north of the city; public buses run there in summer, otherwise take a taxi.

A story
The juxtaposition at Sand Lake is genuinely strange: tall reed beds and open water on one side, active sand dunes on the other, with the Helan Mountains providing a backdrop to the west. Locals say it is the only place in China where you can ride a camel in the morning and go birdwatching in the afternoon.
