Nangqen's principal draw is its monasteries — over seventy operate in the county, the majority belonging to the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. Outside the town, the landscape of river gorges and high grassland is itself a reason to come: the valleys between the Mekong headwaters are genuinely remote and scenically striking.
