Regong Arts Museum

The Regong Arts Museum in Tongren town serves as the main institutional showcase for the Rebkong tradition of Tibetan Buddhist art. The collection includes thangkas, butter sculptures, clay figurines, and embroidered textiles — the full range of sacred art forms produced in this valley over several centuries. The museum also documents the social context: who the artists are, how the tradition is transmitted, and its relation to the village monasteries around the city.

This is a good first stop before visiting the monasteries and workshops, as it gives a coherent overview of the tradition you will see alive in the surrounding villages. The labels are in Chinese and Tibetan; an English pamphlet is sometimes available at the entrance. Admission is modest. The building itself is a handsome modern structure with a courtyard that serves as a gathering point in the evenings.
