The Han River runs through the heart of Ankang, and the city's riverside wetland park preserves a stretch of the original riverbank habitat — reed beds, willow woodland, and shallow mudflats — that provides excellent birdwatching. The park is particularly rewarding during spring and autumn migration when waders, ducks, and herons are passing through; grey herons, little egrets, and mandarin ducks are present year-round.
The main park path runs along the northern bank of the Han River east of the city centre, connecting to the riverside promenade. The walk is pleasant in the early morning before traffic builds; the bird count is best in the first hour after dawn. The park is free to enter and accessible on foot from the city centre.
