Ankang's most rewarding experiences are in its surrounding mountains and waterways rather than the city itself. Yinghu Lake offers boat trips and lakeside scenery; the Qinba Mountain gorges contain hiking and river scenery of real quality; and the area's position as one of the last strongholds of the crested ibis makes it genuinely interesting for wildlife-oriented travellers.
