Nangong Mountain is the highest scenic area in the Ankang region, rising to over 2,100 metres in the southern part of the Qinling range. The mountain forest is cool even in summer and contains old-growth trees, mountain streams, and a series of small Buddhist and Daoist temples clinging to the cliffs at various elevations. A cable car provides access to the upper mountain; the walk from the base to the summit takes about three hours.
The area is primarily visited by Chinese domestic tourists seeking cool summer weather — the difference in temperature between the valley floor at Ankang and the mountain summit is often 15 degrees or more in July and August. The mountain road winds through bamboo and broadleaf forest before emerging above the treeline into rocky terrain with wide views over the Qinba ranges to the south. Admission is around 100 yuan including the cable car.
