Hancheng has no railway station directly convenient to the city centre. The most common approach is by bus from Xi'an's纺织城 (Fangzhicheng) bus station, with the journey taking three to four hours depending on traffic. Buses also run from Weinan. From the north, buses connect from Yan'an, passing through Yichuan.
Driving is practical: the G108 national road follows the Yellow River south from Yichuan through Hancheng to Weinan, giving access to the industrial river landscape along the way. From Xi'an, the expressway cuts the journey to under two hours.
