East Peak (Sunrise Platform)

The East Peak (Chaoyang Peak — "Sunrise Peak") at 2,096 metres is the classic destination for a night hike. The standard strategy is to set out from the Yuquanyuan trailhead at the base in the late evening, climb through the night with a headlamp, reach the summit before dawn, watch the sunrise from the broad rocky platform, then descend in daylight. The path is well-marked and the chain-assisted sections are manageable even in darkness if you take them slowly.

The platform itself is broad and flat by Hua Shan standards, with a raised pavilion at the edge that offers the clearest view east. Several small tea houses and rest stops operate through the night during summer. The cloud inversions that form in the valley below, with the other peaks visible above them and the rising sun turning them orange, are the images that appear in most photographs of Hua Shan — this is where they are taken from.

A story
The East Peak sunrise is one of the classic experiences of Chinese mountain travel. At 2,096 metres, the flat-topped summit platform faces precisely east over the Wei River valley, and on a clear morning the sun comes up over the Shaanxi plain in a slow arc that lights up the surrounding peaks while the valley below remains in darkness. It is spectacular — and half of China has the same idea on summer weekends, so the platform fills before dawn with hundreds of people, many of whom have been walking all night.
