Changqing National Nature Reserve

Changqing National Nature Reserve occupies a large stretch of forested mountain terrain in the Qinling range, about 30 minutes by road from Huayang village. It was established partly to protect the rare Qinling giant panda — a subspecies found only in these mountains — along with golden snub-nosed monkeys, golden takin (a large bovid with a golden coat), and the crested ibis, one of China's most endangered birds.

The reserve is not a tourist park with managed viewing areas. Wildlife encounters depend on luck, season, and how far into the forest you go. Spring and autumn are the best times for panda sightings when the animals move to lower elevations. The reserve accepts a limited number of visitors and arranges guided walks with staff. Entry must be arranged in advance through the reserve administration or through the hotel in Huayang village, which can also help organise transport.

A story
The giant panda population in the Qinling Mountains is genetically distinct from those in the Sichuan reserves — Qinling pandas tend to be slightly smaller and have a brown-and-white colouring rather than the black-and-white of Sichuan individuals. Scientists only confirmed the Qinling population as a separate subspecies in 2005. Changqing is one of the key protected areas for this subspecies, and wild panda sightings, while never guaranteed, are more realistic here than at most protected areas in China.
