Huayang's appeal is almost entirely natural: the Changqing Nature Reserve that begins a short drive from the village is one of the best remaining pockets of wildlife habitat in the Qinling Mountains, home to giant pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, and crested ibis. The village itself moves slowly and offers a glimpse of traditional Shaanxi highland life that has largely vanished from more accessible parts of the province.
