Getting There

Xi'an Xianyang International Airport (XIY), 40 km north-west of the city, is one of the busiest airports in inland China, with frequent direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok, and a handful of European hubs. An airport bus and a metro link (Line 14, opened 2021) both reach the city in under an hour.

The high-speed rail network has changed how most Chinese travellers reach Xi'an. Beijing is now four-and-a-half hours by train, Shanghai six, Chengdu three, Luoyang one and a half, and Pingyao two and a half. Trains run from Xi'an North, a vast modern station on the city's outer ring, connected to the centre by metro Line 2. Long-distance overnight trains still run from the older Xi'an Station, just outside the North Gate of the old city walls.

Buses connect Xi'an with the smaller towns of Shaanxi province, but for any longer distance the train is much better.
