Over 8,000 life-size clay soldiers guarding the first Qin emperor

One of the great archaeological discoveries of the 20th century, unearthed in 1974 about 40km east of Xi'an. Three pits contain over 8,000 life-size ceramic soldiers, horses, and chariots buried to guard the first Qin emperor Qin Shi Huang. Each face is individual. Open daily 9am–5pm. Allow three hours minimum. Book ahead in high season — queues can be brutal.
