Jade Emperor Peak

The summit of Mount Tai at 1,545 metres

The Jade Emperor Peak (Yuhuangding) is the highest point on Mount Tai, marked by a small temple to the Jade Emperor and a stele recording the elevation as 1,545 metres. Pilgrims tie red ribbons to the railings of the platform and burn incense in the temple courtyard. At sunrise the platform is shoulder-to-shoulder with people waiting for the first light over the eastern horizon.

A short walk along the summit ridge brings you to the Sun-Watching Peak (Riguanfeng), a slightly lower outlook that is the traditional sunrise spot, and to a number of other shrines, inscriptions, and pavilions. The summit is criss-crossed with paths and easy to spend an hour or two exploring once the climb is done.
